PCTAMIL (Version 1)
README.DOC:
This is a PC based Tamil transliteration tool cum previewer. It
transliterates Tamil documents written in Roman text into Tamil script and
displays in ASCII text mode. Tamil script used in this software has been
developed by the author for text mode, converting the ASCII symbols from code
128 to 253 by Tamil letters. The file TAMIL.COM is a font driver that
produces the bilingual ASCII setup with both English and Tamil fonts. It is
important that you run this font driver before running all the other programs
in this package. Another driver called NORMAL.COM, that is included here,
brings back the normal mono-lingual ascii to your system. Thus, before you run
the program PCTAMIL, TRANSLIT and INTERACT, type `tamil' at the prompt and
'normal' after you are done with Tamil session. Sorry, no printing facility
is provided in this package for now. I am hoping that this work will be
particularly very helpful for improving the habit of writing and reading in
Tamil, besides reading and sending Emails, posting SCT messages etc., in
Tamil. To run the programs in this package, an IBM compatible computer with
386 or higher configuration, atleast 2MB of main memory and an (S)VGA color
monitor are desirable.
PROGRAMS IN THIS DISK
TRANSLIT.EXE
This program, written in Turbo C, converts Romanized text into Tamil script.
It can be used to transliterate documents written in any of the available
trasliteration schemes such as Madurai, Adami, Itrans, Pulavan and Dr.
Malten's scheme used in the gopher service of the institute of Indology and
Tamil Studies (IITS), Germany. To transliterate documents from Pulavan and
Dr. Malten's schemes, however, you may have to use the delimiters \BT & \et
instead of \bt & \et. Using \BT & \et also allows you to transliterate other
Indian language documents written in Roman form to the nearest equivalent
Tamil script. See the file texdoc.doc for more details.
<Usage: translit file1 file2>
File1 is the input Romanized text and file2 is the output ASCII text
file with Tamil script. You can use any of your favorite text editors to view
this file as long as your editor does not load its own font file.
PCTAMIL.EXE
This program, a previewer cum editor, is written in Turbo Prolog to make
things easier to view and edit Romanized Tamil documents. It can only process
files of less than 30 KB of size and please don't attempt to load files with
sizes larger than 30KB. This restriction is mainly due to my using of
Prolog's commands such as file_str(), edit() and display() to take advantage
of Prolog's editing facilities. Type pctamil at the prompt and follow the
instructions. Option <v> from the main menu is very useful for editing and
preparing documents. Some of the windows are not complete in all sense as I
am still working on them. I promise to include everything functional in the
registered version. You have to keep the files translit.exe and table.tam in
the same directory where you run this program. Two temporary files such as
backup.doc and backup.tam will be created automatically everytime you process
a file. ESC or F10 key is the one you may have to use most. See the help
file for the use of other useful editor oriented keys such as F2, F3 etc., by
pressing F1. There is also an option in the main menu to change the color of
letters and background in the screen. Choose any one of the nine setups for
viewing Tamil letters more clearly. Light blue color letters in a dark blue
background and white color letters in a dark blue background are the ones you
may want to try.
TAMIL.COM
This is a font driver with bilingual ASCII fonts. This was developed using
one of the public domain font editors called evafont. Mr. Pete I. Kvitek of
Moscow, Russia owns the copyright of the font editor Evafont.
*******TAMIL.COM must be run before running all the other files in this
package.****** At present this font driver supports only VGA color monitors
and no driver for either EGA or CGA is provided. Another advantage of this
bilingual font driver is that you can use this in any of your Tamil based
programming environments easily using its ASCII mapping.
NORMAL.COM
This file changes the bilingual ASCII mode created by TAMIL.COM into normal
mode. This file must be executed after processing all your Tamil files.
INTERACT.EXE
This is a transliteration program that can be used interactively to improve
your skill in writing Tamil in Roman text. Type tamil first at the prompt and
type interact.
TED.COM
This is a public domain editor. Use the command ted <filename> to read the
bigger files with Tamil text created using translit.exe.
BHARATHI.DOC
Some selected poems from Bharathiyar's songs.
SUJATHA.DOC
This is an example transliterated document consisting of selected text from
the book \bt kaNaiyaaziyin kataicippakkangaL \et by \bt ManimEkalaip
piracuram.\et.
TEXDOC.DOC
This is a LateX file originally written by Mr. Bala Swaminathan of St. Luis
and kept along with Madurai software package. Example documents from various
transliteration schemes such as Madurai, Adami and Itrans are included in this
file to show the compatiblity of translit.exe with all these translation
schemes. For those who prepare Tamil documents using LateX, PCTAMIL is a good
tool for both editing and previewing the input Roman text in Tamil script.
The program translit.exe does not change anything written after the symbol
'\'. Thus, the TeX commands such as \bt(12), \begin{verbatim} \et etc., that
might occur within Tamil environment need not be provided with any switcher to
go to English mode.
IITS.DOC
This is a document file consisting of some sample dictionary entries taken
from the online-dictionary of the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
I am thankful to Prof. Thomas Malten of IITS, Germany to let me use some
sample dictionary entries from their Gopher service. I am also thankful to
Mr. Bala Swaminathan and Dr. Srinivasan for their permission to use their
documents as sample documents.
REGISTRATION
This is a shareware that can be freely copied to anyone as long as this readme
document is included with all the copies. However, you are requested to own a
registered version of this software, instead of this pre-release version, by
sending $10 to the following address. This nominal registration cost covers
only the cost of development and is not intended for any profit. Registered
version will include a recent program of PCTAMIL with all the available
additional facilities. I will also include an additional program that can
handle relatively larger files of around 60 to 70 KB of size. Besides these,
I will also be able to make any alteration such as program designs, readablity
of any specific letter etc., as you wish.
